A juvenile driver died and two other juveniles were injured after a single-vehicle crash in Black Diamond in a car they had reportedly carjacked in Maple Valley.

Black Diamond Police assisted the King County Sheriff’s Office with an armed carjacking at about 11:27 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28 in the 22000 block of SE 288th Street, according to a Black Diamond Police press release.

A driver reported he had been rear ended by another vehicle and then someone from the other car hopped out with a gun and carjacked his car, a silver Hyundai, according to an email from the King County Sheriff’s Office. No shots were reported.

Two Black Diamond Police officers assisted the Sheriff’s Office with locating the suspects, according to Black Diamond Police. An officer traveling west in the 22000 block of SE 296th Street saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspects driving at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction.

By the time the officer was able to slow and turn around, the vehicle was no longer in sight and a pursuit was never initiated, according to Black Diamond Police. As the officer was conducting an area search for the lost car, a deputy advised they possibly had the suspect car at Lake Sawyer Grocery. Officers diverted to this location, but the car was not associated with this incident.

A Black Diamond officer traced back to the location where the car was last seen, and it was found to be off the road at the intersection of SE 297th Street and 224th Avenue SE, according to Black Diamond Police. The car was involved in a single car crash into a tree and the occupants appeared to have significant life-threatening injuries.

Officers and fire personnel attempted lifesaving efforts, but the driver was pronounced deceased after being transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Two other occupants were transported to Harborview with life-threatening injuries.

The suspects are reportedly between the ages of 15 and 17, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A spokesperson said he did not have genders for the three.

The vehicle was recovered and was eventually impounded by the Sheriff’s Office for a search warrant to be served on the vehicle at later time to collect evidence. This case will be followed up on by the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes unit and is still active and open.
