Firefighters rescued two adults and an infant from the third floor of a Kent apartment complex fire on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 26.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 4:10 p.m. to a fire at the Berkeley Heights Apartments in the 22600 block of 91st Way South, according to an Aug. 28 email from Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak. The apartments are just west of Highway 167.

“Puget Sound Fire firefighters, from our heavy rescue unit, Rescue 307, used ground ladders and rescued two adults and one infant from a third-floor balcony,” Pawlak said. “Due to the fire conditions, the family was not able to exit their apartment by the front door.”

About 20 people from seven families were displaced, Pawlak said. Red Cross assisted the families with emergency needs.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury and was treated at a local hospital and released, Pawlak said. Nobody else was injured.

Approximately 20 fire department units responded to the two-alarm fire, Pawlak said. The Zone 3 Fire Cadets also responded and provided rehab support for the firefighters. It took about an hour to extinguish the fire.

Seven apartments were damaged, three from the fire and four suffered water damage, Pawlak said. The fire started in a third-floor apartment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Pawlak said.
